Crossings — a new documentary film about 30 women peacemakers who made a historic crossing of the De-Militarized Zone separating North and South Korea to call for peace — will have its West Coast premiere at the 38th Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival (LAAPFF) on May 10. The film, by Emmy-award-winning filmmaker Deann Borshay Liem (Geographies of Kinship, Memory of Forgotten War), follows the women leaders, including Women Cross DMZ co-founders Christine Ahn and Gloria Steinem and Nobel Peace Laureates Leymah Gbowee and Mairead Maguire, on their unprecedented journey as they navigate logistical and political challenges. Through their story, Crossings explores enduring questions about the war’s legacies and the role women play in resolving the world’s most intractable conflicts.
“Crossings is a powerful film that can open people’s hearts and minds to the ongoing tragedy of the division of the Korean Peninsula,” said Christine Ahn, co-founder and Executive Director of Women Cross DMZ. “It’s also an inspiring story of women’s organizing and how a grassroots movement is mobilizing now to end the US’ longest conflict in Korea.”
As part of the 2022 Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival, Crossings will screen in-person at Tateuchi Democracy Forum @ JANM (100 N Central Ave) in Los Angeles on May 10 at 7:30pm PT, followed by a Q&A with director Deann Borshay Liem and Christine Ahn.
Crossings premiered at the Hawai’i International Film Festival in November 2021. More nationwide screenings will follow this year.
