One year ago, the Korea peace movement lost one of its most effective and beloved leaders, Hyun Lee, after a long battle with breast cancer. To honor Hyun’s legacy and her deep desire to inspire the next generation of activists, Women Cross DMZ is raising funds to support 30 young leaders to travel to Washington, DC to collectively call for Korea Peace Now!
Hyun, who was the National Campaign & Advocacy Strategist at Women Cross DMZ, devoted her life to realizing peace on the Korean Peninsula. She played a key role in building the Korea Peace Now! Grassroots Network, which now consists of ten chapters nationwide. This powerful grassroots movement led to the first-ever Congressional resolution calling for an end to the Korean War with a peace agreement.
In her final days, Hyun expressed her desire to cultivate more young activists to join and lead our grassroots movement for Korea peace. To honor Hyun’s legacy, we are raising $30,000 to send 30 young leaders under the age of 30 to participate in a national action to end the Korean War in Washington, DC, July 27-28, 2023.
Participants of the national gathering will have the opportunity to participate in numerous advocacy actions, including a rally and march at the White House calling for peace in Korea, a press conference at the House triangle with Congressional Korea Peace champions, a full-day conference between strategists and activists organizing for peace in Korea, and a screening of the documentary Crossings by Emmy award-winning filmmaker Deann Borshay Liem. You can learn more about the July national gathering here.
We recognize that building the political will for the United States to negotiate a peace agreement with North Korea is a monumental task. It will require a broad, multigenerational, multiracial, and multi-sectoral movement. We especially need the energy, drive, passion, and “can’t stop, won’t stop” determination of our young leaders to ensure that this grassroots movement continues for generations to come. The national gathering is a significant opportunity to share knowledge between activists spanning generations and experiences.
Would you consider supporting this delegation of youth to Washington to work alongside longtime peace activists to finally bring closure to the seven-decade-long Korean War?
Whether addressing Members of Congress or rallying activists at an antiwar protest, Hyun always delivered her message with calm, poise, and passion. It’s time to cultivate the next generation of activists to inherit Hyun’s legacy and lead our movement.
