Join us at these upcoming Women Cross DMZ events in DC & LA
Dear Friend,
July 27 marks the 69th anniversary of the signing of the armistice, which makes this is an especially important time to reflect on the Korean War, the United States’ longest war.
In Washington, DC, the Korean War Veterans Memorial Foundation will host a Wall of Remembrance Dedication Ceremony, where President Biden and South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol will speak. Women Cross DMZ will also be there, and we’ll hold a vigil right after the event to remind people of the continued consequences of this unresolved war. We’ll also host a free screening of the new documentary Crossings by Emmy award-winning filmmaker Deann Borshay Liem (Geographies of Kinship, Memory of Forgotten War), followed by a moderated discussion, at Busboys and Poets (Brookland location) at 7pm that evening. Seating is limited so RSVP now.
For those in the area who can’t make it, Crossings will also screen as part of the DC Asian Pacific Film Festival, July 14-17. This virtual-only screening will be available to audiences in DC, Virginia, and Maryland. Purchase passes here.
I’m also excited to announce that the Los Angeles Korean-American Musicians’ Association (LAKMA) will host a benefit concert for Women Cross DMZ at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles on August 6.
“Peace Concert: Unified in Friendship and Harmony” will feature performances by LAKMA Symphony Orchestra and Chorale, as well as a screening of exclusive clips from Crossings. LAKMA believes that “music has the power to uplift communities and transform mindsets… [and] that this evening will be a time for communities to come together to renew efforts to achieve peace on the Korean Peninsula.”
Tickets can be purchased here. A portion of the proceeds will go to Women Cross DMZ. Use code “PEACECONCERT2OFF” for $2 off.
We’re honored that LAKMA has chosen to support Women Cross DMZ, so please join us and help spread the word to your friends in Los Angeles!
Then on Sunday, August 7, join us for a matinee screening of Crossings, followed by a conversation with me, filmmaker Deann Borshay Liem, and WCDMZ Board Chair Aiyoung Choi, moderated by Cathi Choi, an activist and attorney based in Los Angeles. Women Cross DMZ is co-hosting the screening with GYOPO, a collective of diasporic Korean cultural producers and arts professionals generating and sharing progressive, critical, intersectional and intergenerational discourses, community alliances, and free educational programs in Los Angeles and beyond. The screening venue, Robinson S.P.A.C.E., is a community home base and launching pad for abolitionist, anti-white supremacist organizations and movements. Register for the event here.
In other news, the Feminist Peace Initiative (led by Women Cross DMZ, MADRE, and Grassroots Global Justice Alliance) has partnered with Foreign Policy in Focus to publish a series of pieces highlighting how the RIMPAC war games now underway and the militarism resulting from the “Great Power Competition” between the US and China are harming communities in the Asia-Pacific, and how feminist leaders are responding.
Read Christine Ahn’s piece: “The Feminist Response to RIMPAC and the U.S. War Against China”
Read Ann Wright’s piece: “US and NATO Escalate Tensions with Asia-Pacific War Games”
Check out Foreign Policy in Focus for more articles in the coming days and weeks (RIMPAC ends Aug. 4).
We hope you’ll join us at these upcoming events and help spread the word!
In peace and hope,
Christine Ahn
