Women Cross DMZ is looking for a Communications Consultant to join our small but mighty team to help change public opinion in the U.S. in support of peace in Korea. This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to meaningful narrative and policy change to create a more peaceful, just, and sustainable world for all.
As Communications Consultant, you will be responsible for ensuring that all internal and external communications for the organization and our Korea Peace Now! campaign reflect our mission, goals, and theory of change, and are in alignment with our Organizational Guidelines. Working with our Executive Director, Director of Policy and Organizing, Coordinator of Activism and Special Campaigns, and Communications Strategist, you will play a vital role in shaping and implementing our communications strategy to successfully grow our movement of supporters and build narrative power for peace.
We are seeking a strategic thinker who is passionate about our mission to end the Korean War with a peace agreement, educate the public and policymakers about this issue, and connect it to our broader goal of ending militarism and wars by advancing a feminist foreign policy for peace and justice.
This is a fully remote, part-time contract position (20-28 hours per week), paid hourly at the rate of between $40-$60/hour depending on experience, with the potential to become a full-time salaried position. The contract will be reviewed after a 4 month period. Deadline to apply is April 5, 2024.
Scope of Work
External communications:
Create supplemental organizational materials like one-pagers, brochures, flyers, posters, merch, holiday cards, etc.
Draft crisis or rapid response messaging when necessary
Safeguard the reputation of the organization online
Draft, design, and send monthly newsletters to our subscribers using Action Network
Work with Communications Strategist on writing press releases, statements, op-eds, speeches, proposals, and when necessary, crisis or rapid response messaging
Internal communications:
Create and manage organizational editorial calendar
Keep internal record of all speaking engagements, events, and media mentions
Securely manage the storage of documents, photos, videos, and sensitive information using encrypted tools
Manage and track deadlines for communications-related responsibilities using Asana
Help with logistical support for online and in-person meetings as needed
Social media:
Manage and monitor the organization’s online platforms, including Instagram, X/Twitter, and Facebook
Create original, engaging, and educational social media posts, graphics, and videos
Promote upcoming events, webinars, media, statements, reports, news analysis, etc.
Create messaging around important anniversaries
Keep social media accounts active and engaged, increase followers and engagement, identify opportunities for collaborative posts, respond to inquiries, etc.
Media relations:
Work with media consultant to help pitch media at key times to amplify Women Cross DMZ’s work and the message of peace through earned media, op-eds, and letters to the editor
Respond to media inquiries in a timely manner
Send out press releases
Develop and maintain relationships with key reporters
Keep media list up to date
Websites:
Oversee websites for Women Cross DMZ and Korea Peace Now, ensuring they are accurate and up to date.
Provide support as necessary for the Feminist Peace Initiative website.
Work with website developer on any necessary updates, changes, etc.
Support Advocacy and Organizing teams:
Work with the Organizing Team to write and send monthly Korea Peace Now! Grassroots Network newsletter using Action Network
Support the Korea Peace Now! Grassroots Network Communications Committee of volunteer grassroots activists in alignment with the goals of the Korea Peace Now! Grassroots Network
Attend monthly KPNGN meetings and provide support as necessary
Manage Program Associate:
Assign and oversee the work of a part-time program associate (5 hours per month) on administrative tasks such as updating websites with events, media hits, videos, etc., and managing supporters in Action Network, etc.
Misc:
Monitor general email inboxes for Women Cross DMZ and Korea Peace Now!
Determine and oversee Women Cross DMZ’s media and communications budget, track expenses, oversee communications tools, subscriptions, and billing
Participate in weekly staff meetings, share communications updates with staff, occasionally facilitate and take notes
Help support and strategize on fundraising efforts, including a fundraiser in July and end-of-year fundraiser
Help manage supporters and subscribers using Action Network
Manage the production of published reports alongside policy experts
Desired Qualifications:
Minimum 1-3 years of experience in a communications role at an advocacy organization or issue-based campaign or 3-5 years of experience in journalism
Excellent judgment, with the ability to navigate politically sensitive and complex topics with nuance
Strong communication and writing skills, using clear and compelling language
Knowledge of the fundamentals of strategic communications
Passion for educating the public and policymakers on issues related to Korea, feminist foreign policy, endless war, and gendered impacts of militarism
Proven track record of engaging the media and identifying media moments
Strong planning and organizational skills, including attention to detail, and the ability to self-manage multiple projects and timelines
Digital literacy across social media platforms. Previous social media experience is strongly desired
Experience using WordPress, Tresorit, Signal, ProtonMail, ActionNetwork, Asana
Video editing and design skills are a plus
Completion of a BA in Communications, Journalism or a Liberal Arts degree such as Political Science, History or English.
