July 27th marks the 69th anniversary of the signing of the armistice that suspended—but did not permanently end—the Korean War. As we honor the service of the more than 36,000 American servicemembers and 7,100 supporting Korean troops who died during that three-year conflict, we must also remember the more than three million Koreans, mostly civilians, who died during the war, as well as the continued costs of this unresolved war that continue to this day. The consequences can be measured not only by the continued division of the Korean Peninsula and tragic separation of Korean families, but also by the extreme militarization and unceasing arms race on the Korean Peninsula. As Americans, we have a duty and moral responsibility to help bring closure to this oldest U.S. forever war, which would improve the security of both Koreans and Americans. We call on the Biden administration to pursue the hard work of diplomacy with North Korea and officially end the Korean War by replacing the armistice with a peace agreement.
Honor Their Service: End the Korean War: Americans sacrificed their lives for peace in Korea. It’s time for the Biden administration to complete this mission by negotiating a permanent settlement to the Korean War and taking the risk of another devastating conflict off the table.
